The purpose of the Galveston County Floodplain Permitting Department is to help educate and enforce floodplain management. Galveston County adopted Floodplain Regulations in April of 1971 and the Dune Protection and Beach Access Plan on October 25, 2004. These codes are a minimum standard, protecting life, health, property and public welfare.

To monitor compliance, the Floodplain Permitting Department is responsible for permitting all development as defined in the Floodplain Regulations, as well as researching existing structures to grandfather or permit. The Floodplain Permitting Department also maintains current and historical FEMA FIRM maps in order to make flood zone determinations.
